Nació en la ciudad de Valladolid, Michoacán, en 1765 hoy conocido como Morelia. Estudió en el Colegio de San Nicolás, del cual Hidalgo era rector y se ordenó como sacerdote. Durante su juventud, Morelos fue discípulo de Hidalgo, quien lo nombró coronel y dio como tarea extender la revolución hacia el sur, demostrando grandes dotes militares. Gracias a las derrotas hacia los españoles se ganó el mote de “Genalísimo”. En 1813 reunió en Chilpancingo el congreso que redactó el Acta de Independencia en la que se proclama La República Mexicana. En 1815 lo aprehenden en la batalla de Temazcala y es fusilado en Ecatepec, un mes después. En 1828, su ciudad natal recibe el nombre de Morelia y en 1869 Juárez decretó la creación del estado que lleva su nombre.
